Bringing Color to winter
Winter can be grey, cold, and wet. But it doesn’t have to be! Or at least it doesn’t have to be grey. Here are a few ideas for adding some vibrancy to your winter landscape.
Winter Pots
Flower pots are a great way to add color to your winter landscape. Instead of planting flowers though, fill them with evergreen garlands or wreaths, colored Christmas orbs, lights, birch branches, and more. This is a fun way to add color that won’t fade over the drab winter months, and really pops in a fresh snowfall!
Wreaths
Evergreens are the name of the game when it comes to winter color. Wreaths are a great way to add some greenery and can be decorated with additional ornamentation such as orbs, lights, and ribbons to add more color.
Look out your windows to see if there are any fences, trees, or sides of your house that might make a nice place to hang wreaths — and a nice view for you to enjoy all winter long.
Garlands
Like wreaths, evergreen garlands can be used to add color to your yard. They look great on outdoor banisters, wrapped around poles, or draped along the tops of retaining walls.
Birdhouses
You might not hear the birds chirping in the winter mornings, but they’re around. Winter is a great time to put out a colorful bird feeder so birds can snack and feed during the harsh winter months.
Keep the feeder in an area partially sheltered from the wind such as against your house or garage. This will help attract birds and give you a good perspective to watch them from.
Different seeds attract different birds, but black oil sunflower seed is one of the most calorie-rich and easy seeds for birds to eat. It will attract many species including woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays, and finches.
If you love birds enough to go all out, consider setting up a heated birdbath. It will keep the water from freezing so they have a place to drink and bath throughout the frigid winter months.
