Flagstone Patios

Flagstone patios are a great way to create a more natural look for your outdoor living space. All our flagstone patios are made with stone in earthy blue, gray, and red tones that blend into the Des Moines landscape and complement it beautifully. Flagstones provide a great textured surface that’s extremely durable, so you can trust it to outlast your needs.

As for installation, flagstone can be laid 2 ways: in a loose cut style, or a tight cut style. Loose cut patios are hand-laid with natural flagstone, leaving 2-4 inches of space between each piece. This allows the natural shape of each flagstone to shine. Eventually, the patio is completed by being filled in with mulch or allowing plants to fill in the gaps.

Tight cut patios are also laid by hand, but each piece is cut onsite to fit the piece next to it like a puzzle. They are more labor intensive to install, but there are no gaps between the stones, leaving a smooth finish void of mulch or creeping plants.

You can also use flagstone in conjunction with materials like pavers, bricks, or concrete for a more varied look — what you choose really comes down to your preferences. We’ll work with you to create the backyard patio of your dreams, one that perfectly suits your vision. If there’s a different material you have your eyes on, we can most likely accommodate it, so don’t be afraid to ask!

You’ll find examples of both loose and tight flagstone patios below. We can also incorporate flagstone into walkway designs, or use them to create natural pathways in your yard. Just like paver patios, many people also incorporate fire pits into their patio designs, which you can see examples of on our fireplaces and fire pits page.

Adding a flagstone patio will truly add value and space to your central Iowa home. You’ll create a perfect space for entertaining, and a space your family will love to hang out in. We also love that every flagstone patio is unique since they’re made using natural stones.
